Job 01 · Pick the best night
The Competition Grid scores every night in a market from 0 to 100. Not a head count: how it feels to book against. One arena show counts. A dozen open mics do not. Use it for a one-off date or for every stop on a tour.
Night Pressure · interactive
A sample September for the Detroit metro, shaped after the real grid. The number under each date is how many events are competing. The colour is how much they matter.
How Night Pressure is scored
The score is auditable event by event. Every listing's weight shows on its row in the app, so any number can be traced back to what produced it.
Music shows are sized by their venue: real capacity when we have it, venue type otherwise. Open mics, jams and karaoke draw participants, not an audience, so they barely move the score. Community events are sized by how much of that crowd would otherwise be at a show. Anything known to start before 4 PM is cut to about a third.
The same concert reaches us from several sources under different titles, and festivals list every set separately. Each venue counts once per night, its biggest listing, and the rest are marked as such.
Anything weighing ×1 or less adds with diminishing returns, because a dozen niche events split a dozen niche audiences. Only real draws push a night up the ladder.
The night's total is scaled against a fixed reference point chosen from the real distribution of every region-night nationally, not this region's own best or worst night. With a whole state selected, each region is scored on its own and the state reads as the activity-weighted average.
